The Real Mood Board!

Hi! Welcome back to the blog! This is my mood board for our opening film. If you go back to my old blog posts, you can see my previous mood board that was supposed to be of the genre of the film and an idea of our opening film. We have essentially stuck to the same idea with just some minor adjustments and more details. Therefore I wanted a similar format, however, with images that were more specific to our character and her story. So may I present to you the mood board of our film “The Art of Smiling.”

So let me start giving you the details of my mood board. I recreated the split look again by having our main character, Rachel Gomez, “great” life and on the other side of the cracks we see her reality of life. I kept the cracks in the middle just like my older mood board because I like how that represents our character's life. I decided to put the title in the middle to concentrate on the name and to introduce it. Moreover, I liked the pink background because it represents the feminine side of Rachel. Let me start describing some of the images. On the left, we have pictures of a group of friends, a pair of bestfriends, and even a couple being in love. More to the top, we see a girl dressed in a summer dress and very cute, which will kind of represent the outfit we have in mind for our character. At the very top, we see a big pool party, that we hope to at least create the feeling of with lighting and some props. This will be our main setting for the opening sequence. We also see some teens drinking and another picture of a couple. On the left side we see her having the “perfect” teenage life with all of her friends, boyfriend, and big fun parties. On the right side, we have the actual reality of Rachel. At the top, we have a picture of an adult couple fighting, which will represent Rachel’s parents fighting and having a full argument. Next to that image we have an image of a girl being essentially “forced” to smile, which shows us how Rachel forces herself to smile or appear as someone else with a perfect life. Starting to go to the bottom there is a picture of a girl on the toilet, which shows Rachel’s eating disorder even though she makes others believe that she is doing a diet or workout. We then see some black and white pictures of women also having a forced or fake smile. When you keep going down to the bottom, there is a picture of a girl in a bathroom looking at herself in the mirror in not the best way. I included this picture because it represents one of our scenes that our character is going to be doing. Lastly, we see a teenage couple arguing showing how Rachel’s relationship with her boyfriend truly is. This is the explanation of my mood board! So now let's get into some more details about other categories.

-Lighting: Lighting is more difficult because we do not have the right equipment for the best lighting. However, for the party scene with her friends, it is going to be at night with low key lighting, but in some instances, it will be high key lighting depending where the characters are talking in the party. We also believe to maybe have some disco lights in order to create that effect of a party without having more than 6 people around us. In our other scene when Rachel is in the bathroom, the lighting is most likely going to be high key lighting, which will have a contrasting effect on our character’s mood at that time. But for now this is the idea of lighting and how it is going to look.

-Props: We are not 100 percent sure of all the props we are going to use, but we definitely have some ideas of what we want. We know we want some red solo cups, to in order create the chaotic vibe of a teenage party. Moreover, the side characters will probably be on their phone because it is the normal use of a teenager .We may include pizza as if the characters are eating and talking, but that one is not positive. Moreover, we are most likely going to need a lip gloss to see Rachel applying her lip gloss after crying or having her breakdown in the bathroom. For now these are some of the props we have in mind.

-Settings: Since we only have 2 minutes to create an opening sequence we can't have too many settings, however, we have two main settings. One would be Rachel at the party, which would be at the backyard, whether it be on a couch, lounge chair, or sitting by the pool. We are going to see her in several parts of the backyard to show sometime passing and elliptical editing. Moreover, we will have a setting in the bathroom where Rachel is having her breakdown. These will be the settings we have in our opening sequence.

-Costumes: For our Main character we are probably going to have her dress up in a cute summer dress and in either some heels, sneakers, or sandals. She will probably be having a light makeup look and some nice dainty jewelry. She will probably have her phone and maybe some car keys. She also may have a little purse to have a full look. Other side characters will probably have some jeans and a crop top, They may also have some light makeup.

-Main Characters: Our main character is going to be Rachel Gomez. All the other characters at the moment do not have any name nor real story. If we do have any more information on our characters I will update the blog and tell you about it.

So thank you for coming and welcome to the beginning of our film “The Art of Smiling.”
