Representation in Film :)
Hi there again! Today I will be talking about representation in our film. Representation is a very big issue at least in the Hollywood industry but everyday there seems to be more progress in diversity and representation of all types around the world. So today I will be discussing the representation that we had in our film.
Our film is a teenage drama so it has its stereotypical moments such as the “popular” girl, her frenemy, her “great” life, the parties, etc., however, I believe that you need to have some staples of teenage drama because then is it a teenage drama? On the other hand, in most teenage dramas the characters really are perfect maybe besides their significant other breaking up with them. In this case, we dived a bit into the mental health aspect of it and how our character is dealing with it. I would say that it is not that stereotypical.
I believe that our cast and crew represents and is diverse since we are from south Florida. Although most of our crew is Hispanic or from the Caribbean, I did like the mix of cultures we had even though we were not able to have a full dive into each character's culture.
I don't know if it would be considered a change, however, if we did have more time to go into our characters, such as Rachel I would love to maybe show her Hispanic culture and traditions. I feel that is something we lack in film. We always want to make a one group of ethnicity film even if it is a minority or majority. To have a film truly diverse you need to see several people from each culture and ethnicity. I think growing up in South Florida has taught me how diverse we are and that we can all learn from each other.
Overall I believe that our film was representative and if time was provided could have been a great cultural experience.
