Colors in "The Art of Smiling" :)
I’m back again and today I am going to be discussing the colors in our film “The Art of Smiling.” There are several colors in the projects so let's get started.
As for settings, we decided to make the backyard party setting very saturated as it emphasized the colors of Rachel's pink shirt and the sunset in the background. It made everything look very pretty and “perfect” which can provide that movie aesthetic for a teenage drama. In the bathroom you see quite the opposite, the bathroom scene looks gray in comparison however, we did not touch the saturation of the scene and it creates a very contrasting feeling of both scenes. While the backyard scenes show you the fun pretty good life that Rachel seems to have in the bathroom scene, it is so gray that it represents the mood of Rachel and can also show how here she is her true self because there is no amount of color at this point that can hide her façade.
The Costumes were a different part of color. We wanted to make sure that Rachel seemed to be the main character with her costume. Her pink shows her femininity, flirty, and kind side. She is also wearing white sunglasses and a white purse which can show that she is “pure”. As for the other characters they’re not wearing much color. Almost all of them are wearing very plain and mundane colors such as black, brown, and some hints of white. In the flashback you still see Rachel with pink but then you see her enemy Ruby wearing red, which can show how she is mimicking her and is not as “perfect” as how others probably view Rachel.
The title is another aspect of color. As I have said before, I made the title pink because it shows the supposed perfection and happiness Rachel has in her life. The very slight blue glitch effect that the title has behind it can show how sooner or later Rachel’s masks will break and the truth will be revealed.
Overall, we did try to play with the color aspect for this film as we do know that it can show and affect the emotion of not only our main character but our audience. I hope you had a nice time seeing how we used color in our film!
